Pre-Congress Courses
It gives us pleasure to announce that the FIGO Committee for Capacity Building in Education and Training (CCBET) in conjunction with the Società Italiana di Ginecologia e Ostetricia (SIGO) will organise a number of pre-Congress courses on a variety of issues relevant to obstetrics and gynaecology. FIGO would like to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the presence of so many delegates who will attend the Congress to improve their knowledge and skills in the topics that will be presented. As these courses will be held in different hospitals in Rome, the Roman scientific community will be also involved in their organisation. The courses will be given by experienced speakers and will be based on practical and hands-on skills.
These courses will take place on Sunday 7th October 2012.
Please note no Congress transport will be provided to hospitals. Participants are requested to use public transport to reach the required location.

Course 6: The FIGO Fertility Tool Box ™: Infertility Diagnosis and Treatment in Low Resource Settings.
Ospedale G. B Grassi, Ostia - click here to find out How to reach
The FIGO Committee on Reproductive Medicine (CRM) is focused on helping infertile women become pregnant and/or on alleviating the burden of infertility. The major activity of the FIGO CRM is development of The FIGO Fertility Tool Box™ which is a document intended for use by stakeholders in infertility to provide a comprehensive and integrated set of tools that will increase access to treatment and prevention, and so reduce the global burden of infertility. The Tool Box focuses on universal principles, recognizing that each country and region will decide how to utilize this resource in a unique way that is most appropriate for them. In other words, it has been designed for maximum flexibility in its application by many different stakeholders in many different global situations.
This program will address the impact of infertility globally and introduce and explain in detail how The FIGO Fertility Tool Box™ can be used to expand access to fertility treatment in low resource settings.

Course 7: The Global Obstetrics Network (GONet): Designing a Clinical Trial in Obstetrics.
Policlinico Tor Vergata University Hospital - click here to find out How to reach
The Global Obstetrics Network (GONet) is a group of international investigators that perform clinical trials and observational studies in obstetrics. The group aims to improve the health of women and babies through the co-ordinated completion and implementation of clinical trials. This one day educational course is suitable for anybody who is interested in planning a clinical trial. The specific learning objectives of the day are:
- Understand the underlying principles of bias in a clinical investigation and the benefits of randomisation.
- Understand the principles and advantages and disadvantages of different methods of randomisation.
- Participate in the design of a clinical trial. Learn how to formulate a clinical question, how to decide upon inclusion/exclusion criteria, understand the principles on which to base the choice of a primary outcome for a trial, and the challenges inherent in different designs.
- Be able to complete a sample size calculation to guide the planning of a study.
- Understand some of the issues in finalizing and implementing a clinical trial protocol.
The format of the workshop will be short plenary talks interspersed with small group sessions facilitated by members of GONet, all of whom are experienced in designing and conducting clinical trials. The small groups will go through the exercise of designing a randomised trial on a topic in obstetrics. There will be a minimum of six faculty member who will be facilitators for small groups of up to 8 participants.
